Is there a way to stop grey hair from growing?
There is no magical solution to treat and prevent grey hair; there are many ongoing studies, but to date, there is no special treatment to stop grey hair. There was a paper that related smoking to the presence of more grey hairs.
What is the cost of hair transplant?
Is the texture of the hair determined by the ‘nutrient’ I give to my hair/ scalp after the transplant? Hair transplant is traditionally a very costly procedure especially in the US and Europe. But in Asia, prices have become very much more competitive so hair transplant has become a viable option for treatment of hair loss. The treatment ranges from $10 – 4 per graft depending on the treatment centre and the method used. Generally, FUE (Follicular unit extraction), because it is newer and much safer, will cost more than the Strip Method. Most patients need 500-1500 grafts. After the transplant, most patients are advised to continue with oral medication such as Propecia or Proscar or use the topical solution Minxoidil to maintain the original hair as well as to enhance the growth of the transplanted hair. Even if you do not use them, the texture of the transplanted hair will not be affected. It just needs some time to grow – usually six to nine months.
Why do some people contract alopecia areata?
Alopecia areata is a disease that affects the hair follicles, which are part of the skin from which hairs grow. In most cases, hair falls out in small, round patches about the size of a quarter. Many people with the disease get only a few bare patches. Some people may lose more hair. Rarely, the disease causes total loss of hair on the head or complete loss of hair on the head, face, and body.
How can it be cured or prevented from recurring?
We do not know the cause of the condition and why some people have this condition. It cannot be prevented from recurring and cannot be cured. But it can be treated with steroid injections or immunotherapy when it occurs and it will usually go away. It’s not a dangerous condition, but it’s very distressing.
How do I solve the problem of itchy scalp?
I have been to several dermatologists and have even tried trichological treatments, but none of them have been able to help me with this problem. Itchy scalp and dandruff are related to the condition of the scalp called seborrheic dermatitis. This is a condition that leads to itching and scaling of the scalp (dandruff) and it comes and goes depending on the weather and stress. Scratching makes it worst. It’s related to an abnormal reaction of the skin to yeast (known as Malassezia) in the scalp.
It helps when you frequently shampoo your hair and have a longer lathering time during each wash. There are shampoos that seem to help, especially those with selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, ciclopirox as these help to reduce the amount of Malassezia yeast in the scalp. Shampoos with salicylic acid, tar, sulphur, zinc is also helpful as they soften the dandruff flakes so they wash off more easily. Some of these shampoos are not medically prescribed. You can also get prescription for ketoconazole shampoo 1-2 %.
FUE: A FASTER, SAFER WAY TO TRANSPLANT YOUR HAIR
Hair transplant is the most effective and lasting method to regain hair in balding areas. And now, it is even safer and more effective with the Omnigraft Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method available at Alaxis Medical and Aesthetic Surgery. With a much horter healing period, FUE – developed by Medicamat, France – is able to extract the hair roots individually and quickly. The Cleveland Clinic reported in 2006 that hair transplant using Omnigraft apparatus is safe, effective and significantly reduces the time for the procedure. A large majority of patients were very satisfied.
How it works:
- Area is shaved
- FUE – Hair folliculars harvested from shaved area under LA
- No scar – many small FUE wounds that usually heal in a week
- FUE implantation FUE.. each with 1-3 hair roots
Omnigraft implantation under LA 500-2,000 grafts 6 months.
A hair follicle is extracted from the back of your head under LA – individual follicle. Follicular hair units with one to three hairs are then implanted into the bald areas under LA using Omnigraft implanter. You are able to go back to work the next day, but you may have to cover the shaved area. There will be little pain or discomfort unlike with the strip method, where scar pain may take two to four weeks to subside.
